1985 was the first year for the Mongoose M1 and the first time they offered an entry level BMX. This frame was imported from the USA with the intention of creating something different - not a standard catalogue spec Mongoose M1. The white, chrome and gold colour way was chosen, and then I began collecting parts for around 12 months. In the meantime, the frame was given a full strip and sprayed white. I found a chrome fork from a 1983 Mongoose Californian along with chrome bars from a 1988 Mongoose Expert. On an original Mongoose M1, both of these parts would have been white. NOS Dia Compe gold brakes would have totally blown the budget and build cost out, so I opted for reproduction Dia Compe gold brake set and seat clamp. Although it can't be seen in the photos, the 80's Polygon Head Stem (usually found on Mongoose Californian's) as well as the original 44T Sugino chainring were polished with the top cap re-anodised in gold. The frame and fork were finished off with an 85/86 inspired custom cut, black over gold decal set. The period Elina style Velo seat was also refinished with a custom cut gold lighting bolt decal.
